Solution:
Root Cause: Low Wi-Fi RSSI & Transmit Power Amplification
Smart locks with integrated Wi-Fi chips (e.g., August Wi-Fi Smart Lock 4th Gen, Schlage Encode) adjust their radio output based on Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). When the 2.4GHz RSSI falls below -75 dBm due to distance, thick exterior walls, or metal door foil, the Wi-Fi modem dynamically scales its radio power to maximum output milliwatts. Additionally, packet loss forces repeated TCP handshake retries, keeping the Wi-Fi module awake instead of dropping into its 15µA deep sleep state.
Step-by-Step Fix:
1Check Wi-Fi RSSI in Mobile App:
Open your lock application -> Settings > Device Info / Network Status.Verify RSSI value: -30 to -65 dBm is optimal; -75 to -90 dBm causes severe battery drain.2Move Wi-Fi Access Point / Install 2.4GHz Range Extender:
Relocate your Wi-Fi router or place a dedicated 2.4GHz Wi-Fi extender within 15 feet (4.5 meters) of the smart door lock.3Reconfigure Wireless Router Settings:
Ensure your 2.4GHz band is configured for 20 MHz channel width (not 40 MHz) to reduce channel interference.Assign a static IP address to the smart lock via DHCP reservation on your router to eliminate DHCP lease negotiation wake-ups.
