Solution:
Root Cause: Windows Update Module Hangs and Component Store Corruption Background Windows services like
TrustedInstaller.exe (Windows Modules Installer) or
TiWorker.exe can become stuck in an endless retry loop attempting to apply pending system updates. This pins one or more CPU cores at 100% utilization continuously, driving up package temperatures and keeping fans screaming.
Diagnostic Verification: 1 Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and click the Processes tab.
2 Sort by CPU column. If Windows Modules Installer Worker or Service Host: Windows Update consumes 25%–100% CPU continuously for over 30 minutes, the service is stuck.
Step-by-Step Fix: 1 Run Windows Update Troubleshooter:
Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Run Windows Update . 2 Reset Windows Update Components via Command Prompt:
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and stop update services: Copy
cmd
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Rename SoftwareDistribution folders, then restart services: Copy
cmd
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
3 Run DISM Image Repair:
Execute DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth followed by sfc /scannow. Prevention & Long-Term Monitoring: Allow Windows Update to complete pending installations fully before shutting down the laptop.
